Bollywood's de-glam and geeky look
Glamorous looks and designer outfits have been synonymous with Bollywood, but 2010 saw a lot of mainstream stars going de-glam. From Bipasha Basu and Aishwarya Rai to John Abraham and Akshay Kumar, few shied away from experimenting with their on-screen appearance.
"Actors are not shying away from experimenting and they are willing to shed those extra kilos of jewellery, designer outfits and make-up to get into character," trade analyst Taran Adarsh told IANS.
"Moreover, since the storylines are getting real, audiences also look for real characters they can connect with. They have started accepting actors in plain looks," he added.
Bipasha in Lamhaa
The otherwise bold and sensual Bipasha opted for a no make-up look in two of her films, Aakrosh and Lamhaa. While Lamhaa saw her playing a simple Kashmiri girl, in Aakrosh she played the role of a tortured wife.
Akshay Kumar played a struggling road contractor in Khatta Meetha. With his shirt buttoned up to the collar, oily hair, and a small pouch and umbrella in hand, Akshay immersed himself in the character of the common man.
John Abraham also turned geek for Abbas Tyrewala's Jhoota Hi Sahi. But the actor admitted he was unsure whether he would be able to carry it off.
"When Abbas spoke to me about the character, I was not worried about the way I would look because I think the look completely befitted the character...I was worried about whether I would be able to carry off the look," John said.
The glamorous Katrina Kaif broke the mould by going completely de-glam for her role as a politician in Prakash Jha's Rajneeti. Her simply tied hair and subdued saris proved to be as popular with the audiences as her fashionable looks.
Vidya Balan oozed sensuality in her bold village girl avatar in Vishal Bharadwaj's Ishqiya. Aishwarya Rai too sported a no-make up look for Mani Ratnam's Raavan. Minissha Lamba went plain for her role in Shyam Benegal's National Award-winning film "Well Done Abba".
Deepika Padukone's plain appearance in Ashutosh Gowariker's Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey has already become a rage. Neha Dhupia also sported a no-make-up look in Phas Gaye Re Obama, where she played the role of a woman gangster.
"Glamour no longer remains the key thing. Young actors have also started realising that success comes from real and entertaining films," Habib Faisal, director of the lighthearted film "Do Dooni Chaar", told IANS.
Do Dooni Chaar saw the real life couple Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor coming together on screen after 30 years.
"Filmmakers are trying to be true to the demographics and the material of the story. So if it requires the actors to go de-glam, they are game for it. The directors want to tell the story honestly and not create false glamour," he added.
The evergreen yet glamorous couple dressed down for their role of a typical middle class husband and wife in the film. Faisal said the crew went shopping in Lajpat Nagar and also went to roadside vendors to pick their clothes.
Yesteryear diva Dimple Kapadia made a comeback with Kabir Sadanand's Tum Milo Toh Sahi, where she played a simple Parsi lady wearing frocks, skirts and shirts with glasses.
Dimple Kapadia has always been known for her flowing hair and glamorous looks. In my film, I wanted to highlight her as a human being and not someone glamorous. It was a risk in its own way considering her image, but we are happy that our efforts paid off," said Sadanand.
"When I told her that this is going to be her look, there were no apprehensions and she was really happy. We picked up a lot of her clothes from street shops," he added.
Most Outrageous Celebs Of 2010
Celebs never let you down when it comes to bad behaviour. It was the year that Mel Gibson was slammed for an alleged racist rant, Charlie Sheen had woman troubles, Lindsay Lohan admitted dabbling in drugs, Dolly Bindra foul-mouthed everyone and more. Celeb antics ensured that there was no dearth of masala in our tabloid. Here's a birds's eye-view of celebs that raised eyebrows in 2010.
Lady Gaga
The year saw eccentric pop star Lady Gaga barge into the scene with quite a noisy bang. Be it for her jaw-dropping music videos, eye-grabbing stage outfits, half-naked airport appearances or middle-finger act at baseball game, Lady Gaga screamed from newspapers front page throughout the year. And she was well rewarded for the effort- her craziness as got her a six million fan following on Twitter. Now you can either love or hate her but you can't ignore her...
Miley CyrusMiley Cyrus
The teenage sweetheart has made Madonna's Papa Don't Preach the motto of her life. From no-panty leaked pics, giving lap dances, smoking bong video, the wannabe adult has left no stone unturned to prove that she can't be tamed! With her risqué outfits and saucy attitude, she is this year's good girl gone bad.
Charlie Sheen
The actor had a rocky year. Just days after a messy divorce from Brooke Mueller, The Two and a Half Men star was back to what he does best - hooking up with pretty girls. But even this went horribly wrong when the porn star accused him of assaulting her in the hotel room. The star's raunchy lifestyle, and obsession with call girls, drug rehab made for dramatic year.
Lindsay Lohan
Thank God for Lindsay Lohan! If it weren't for her wild habits, the year would have been without spice. With drunken driving case, cocaine rehab, porn star role rejection, nude magazine covers, the Mean Girl star went berserk this year. Unfazed by controversies LiLo is trying to pull her life together - sitting and brooding in Bert Ford rehab.
Mel Gibson
The year has seen the Braveheart star hit rock bottom and really hard. The actor has been at the receiving end of accusation of domestic abuse from his ex-partner Oksana. Adding to the blow has been Winona Ryder's revelation that the actor is racist and homophobic. Talk about adding fuel to fire!
Mallika SherawatMallika Sherawat
As if sleazy B-town scenes were not enough, the actress decided to bare it all for a Hollywood film - Hisss. But even the star's bold act couldn't add fizz to the doomed film. From showing off her friendship with Salma Hayek, hobnobbing with Hollywood celebs at Cannes, Mallika's antics irritated no end. To top it all was her wardrobe malfunction at a promotional event for Hisss, which added nothing to her crumbling reputation.
Dolly Bindra
The name Dolly Bindra has become synonymous with fighting and bad mouthing. The abusive and violent Bigg Boss contestant raised tempers inside the Bigg Boss house. Be it abusing everyone in the house to hitting Shweta Tiwari, the foul-mothed Dolly picked a fight at the drop of a hat.
Rakhi Sawant
With no more sense than a sheep, the item girl drew flak for being an ignorant judge on the reality show Rakhi Ka Insaaf. The controversy queen was taken to court for abetting the suicide of a participant on Sawant's reality television show.
Rahul Mahajan
Be it drug abuse cases, or beating his women, Rahul Mahajan has been in the news for the wrong reasons. The incorrigible flirt tied the knot on TV show Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jayega. But showed his repulsive side when Dimpy accused him of beating her. She says Rahul allegedly punched, kicked and dragged her by the hair. His first wife Shweta Singh, who was his childhood friend, had accused him of physically abusing her.
Salman Khan
Salman Khan had a foot-in-mouth moment for which he got flak from everyone. The actor made irresponsible comments about the 26/11 terror attacks on a Pakistan TV channel saying, "Too much hype has been created around the 26/11 attacks because elite people were targeted. Attacks have happened in trains and small towns too, but no one talked about it so much."
Jacqueline to shed clothes for Murder 2

JacquelineMohit Suri, director of Murder 2 tells Mid Day, "I signed her as she fits the role very well. Murder is a brand and I feel Jacqueline carries the sensuality that the character required, very well."
The director reveals why he didn't sign on Mallika Sherawat despite her interest in the project. He informs the tabloid, "We wanted give the project a fresh look. The first Murder also had a new girl (Mallika), which worked. People are also anticipating steamier and more intense love making scenes in the sequel. All I will say is that you will have to wait and watch. As you know, Murder came in 2005. It will be 2011 when Murder 2 will release so obviously the level (sic) will be higher."
Well Mallika, are you ready for fresh competition?
Mallika Sherawat calls Salman 'pussycat'
When Mallika Sherawat speaks, the world listens and when she talks about two fighting Khans, the world sits up and pays attention. So, according to the Haryanvi actress, Salman Khan is a 'pussycat' while Shah Rukh Khan is the 'king of charisma'.
But, here's the catch! Mallika has taken a liking for Bollywood's enfant terrible Salman Khan and 'pussycat' in her dictionary means "good". Replying to one of her followers in Twitter, Mallika posted: "Salman is a pussycat. Don't worry, it's a good thing."
The Hiss actress also had flattering words to say about Shah Rukh Khan. Mallika wrote: "King of Charisma! Luv em :) (sic)"
MallikaTalking about the Guzaarish star, Hrithik Roshan, Mallika wrote: "Talent plus beauty! Lethal!"
But here's the best part. When asked who according to her was the hottest Khan in the industry, Mallika quipped, "Malaika Arora Khan."
