Behind the scenes: Hema Malini takes to production
The Bollywood beauty, who returns to the small screen as a daily soap producer, gives a feel about the show and her film production, Tell Me Oh Khuda:
Why did you decide to produce Maati ki Banno?
I have been producing TV shows for a few years now and this story was very inspiring. I felt the story of this young, innocent girl undergoing all the misery needed to be told. So I decided to produce it.
What is the story line of the show?
It’s a story of the struggle of an innocent girl from Mauritius who comes to Bihar. It’s an absolute roller-coaster ride for the girl and how she gains strength from all her endeavours forms the crux of the show.
You took a break from TV production for a few years. Why is that?
I was a Member of Parliament and at that time I could not have produced any shows. But now that my term is over, I have the time to get back to television.
Which is your favourite show on TV?
It’s tough to choose. I like the shows on Colors and Star Plus. I really like Jhansi ki Rani.
According to you which medium reaches out to the people more — TV or films?
You can’t compare the two media. Through television we connect closely with the characters because we are viewing them almost everyday. Films, on the other hand are more glamorous and dreamy.
How do you think Indian television has evolved over a decade?
It’s a lot more competitive. It is difficult to sustain a show on television. Fortunately, only a strong script, a good story line and impressive characters can make a show work.
Which is your first love — films or TV?
Films, without a doubt.
You acted in Jai Maa Durga few years ago. Will we see you on the small screen again?
No, I am happy producing. As of now, I will not be doing any shows on TV.
What is the status of the film, Tell Me Oh Khuda you are doing with your daughter Esha Deol?
We are done filming it and it’s in the post-production stage. It should release in early 2011.
How do you think the audience will react to Dharmendra’s Yamla Pagla Deewana?
The promos are looking very good and the chemistry between the father and sons is clearly visible. They behave more like friends in the film. I think the film
will do very well. We are all looking forward to it.
